They wanted to fight against slavery and decided to join the war to try to end slavery. They wanted to join the union since the Union was against slavery. Before the war, free African Americans used their right to speak to give speeches to people and to raise awareness of how slavery was unjust.
During the war: African Americans fought in war to try to abolish slavery. Many African Americans helped out the troops by repairing supplies, cooking, and fighting. They also were hospital aides and tried to help heal soldiers that were injured during a battle. Many soldiers died from wounds and diseases.
