How did postbellum black communities differ from slave and antebellum free black communities?
Postbellum communities existed after the Civil War while antebellum communities existed before the war. During the antebellum period, the southern and northern states were largely divided while in the postbellum period, the division between the northern and southern states was resolved. After the Civil War, African Americans formed communities near each other to help each other out and to stick together. Some slaves went back to work at workshops where they had previously worked with their masters before. Many slaves became artisans by becoming apprentices for skilled artisans.
Before the Civil War, slaves were only free in northern states while slaves were still enslaved in southern states. Many slaves from the south tried to escape to the north to be free. Free slaves came together to try to fight against slavery. They gave many speeches and joined the Union during the Civil War.
